Past Imperfect

Massachusetts based artist Emily Eveleth will be showing a new and exciting body of work in the exhibition, Past Imperfect, at Howard Yezerski Gallery the 19th of October through the 27th of November.

New paintings by Eveleth invite the viewer to wonder, question, and decipher meaning through convocation of minimalist iconography, nonverbal communications, and unspecified environs. Ranging in scale from intimate nine inch square pieces to an enveloping seven by twelve foot painting, these phantasmal oil and gouache pieces invigorate the space with a metaphysical reality, utilizing themes of prestige, ambiguity, and how the self may be located in the world both topographically and metaphorically. Past Imperfect implies a looking back at history through the lens of the present- acknowledging that regardless of outcomes, there is no ‘perfect past’.

  Eveleth’s previous exhibition, Future Tense, dealt with the uncertainty of predicting the future and the anxiety instilled in bracing for what cannot be foreseen. One catalytic object that ties Future Tense to Past Imperfect is the archetypal crystal ball: an object used throughout history to make predictions. Eveleth’s fascination with spheres play a large part in this new body of work, incorporating anonymous, industrial-gloved figures cradling orbs of varying origin and composition. These gloved figures also play a major role in the exhibition as a whole, depicted through iterations of universally sublingual gestures many times throughout the gallery. Paintings on mylar and canvas overwhelmingly painted in monochromatic tones activate the walls in a theatrical play of shadow and mystery, leaving grander interpretations open for viewers.

This will be Eveleth’s 13th exhibition at Howard Yezerski Gallery marking twenty-five years Yezerski has represented her. Join us on Saturday, October 20th from 3-5 pm for the opening reception of Past Imperfect at 460 Harrison Ave, Boston, MA.
